Pretzel Crusted Grilled Cheese puts a tasty pretzel twist on everybody’s favorite childhood grilled cheese sandwich.
Throughout the month of April, we celebrated National Grilled Cheese Month with many tasty variations of the classic sandwich. While I developed a delicious Parmesan Crusted Baked Grilled Cheese, that was not the original recipe I had in mind. I wanted to make a grilled cheese with pretzels – in either the crust or the filling, it didn’t matter. Pretzel-something grilled cheese was going to happen. I tried mixing pretzels with cheese for a topping or crushed in the filling, and the results were just not satisfactory. However I am very excited to share that finally on the last day of National Grilled Cheese month I discovered the secret…and it works!
The secret to making a Pretzel Crusted Grilled Cheese successful is….dip the bread in a lightly beaten egg and then in crushed pretzels. Seems simple, right? The egg provides the right amount of moisture for the pretzels to adhere to the bread.
To cook the Pretzel Crusted Grilled Cheese sandwich, I tried both methods of frying and baking. For frying, I used a nonstick skillet sprayed with cooking spray, and the result is crispier than baking, though it takes a little longer. Baking is a very simple, hands off method and it results in more of a pretzel taste. I put instructions for both methods in the recipe below.
- 8 slices bread (any variety)
- 1 cup pretzels, crushed
- 2 eggs
- 4-8 slices cheese (I like to use cheddar)
- cooking spray
- Preheat a nonstick skillet over medium heat and spray with cooking spray.
- Meanwhile, put eggs in a low bowl and lightly beat with a fork. Put pretzels in another separate low bowl.
- Dip one side of a slice of bread in the egg mixture and then dip it in the pretzels. Place pretzel-side down on the preheated skillet and top with cheese. Dip one side of another slice of bread in the egg mixture, and then in the pretzels and then place the not-dipped side on top of the cheese to form the sandwich.
- Cook until golden and cheese starts to melt, flip and cook until the other side is golden and cheese is melted.
- Repeat with the remaining ingredients to make a total of 4 sandwiches.
That’s a creative grilled cheese! As much as I like to be creative in the kitchen I tend to be pretty basic with grilled cheese. This could be inspiration to to do otherwise!
I’ve seen a lot of creative grilled cheeses, but never anything like this! I love the sweet and salty crunchy combined with the melty cheese … mmm so good!
