Grandma’s Brownies #SundaySupper

Grandma’s Brownies are my grandma’s recipe for the best brownies – a rich, chocolaty brownie topped with fudgy frosting!

Tailgating season is upon us, which means finger foods, snack and treats are aplenty. For Sunday Supper this week, we are partnering with Gallo Family Vineyards to celebrate football season by sharing some tasty recipes and wine pairings. This year I was inspired make something chocolaty to pair with Gallo’s Merlot, and my grandma’s to-die-for brownie recipe instantly came to mind.

After devouring Buffalo Chicken Lasagna Cups, hummus with veggies, along with other savory and spicy tailgating fare, our tailgating menu definitely needs something chocolate to balance things out. My grandma’s brownies are the perfect ending to such a delicious party feast!

The recipe for my Grandma’s Brownies starts with a simple brownie made with chocolate syrup. Most brownie recipes I make do not use chocolate syrup, so I assume that is what makes her recipe so unique, moist and tasty. And while the brownies alone are rich, chocolaty and good, she always topped them with the most amazingly fudgy, delicious frosting. The combination makes them a definite fan favorite among her family and friends, and a definite crowd pleaser for any tailgating celebration (or emergency chocolate fix).

For wine pairing, the Merlot from Gallo Family Vineyards is always popular. It pairs well with many standard tailgating foods, and is a perfect complement to a chocolate dessert, such as my Grandma’s Brownies. My grandma would have definitely approved! 🙂

Grandma's Brownies

Author:
Yields: 36 bars
Ingredients
Brownies:
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 can (1½ cups) chocolate syrup
  • 1 cup flour
Frosting
  • 1½ cups granulated sugar
  • 5 tablespoons butter, cut into pieces
  • 6 tablespoons milk
  • ¾ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350F degrees. Spray a 13x9-inch baking pan with baking spray and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream sugar and butter until combined.
  3. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well between each addition.
  4. Stir in syrup and flour, gently folding until combined. Pour batter into prepared baking pan.
  5. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes. Be careful not to over bake - a toothpick inserted in the center should come out with moist crumbs. Remove to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.
  6. FROSTING: In a small sauce pan, bring sugar, butter and milk to a boil, stirring occasionally. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from heat and add chocolate chips. Stir until chips are melted and frosting is thick enough to spread.

For our tailgating celebration with Gallo Family Vineyards, the Sunday Supper tastemakers are sharing recipes featuring at least one of the nine varietals of their mini wine bottles (187ml size).

Merlot is my favorite party wine, closely followed by Cabernet Sauvignon, which also go very well with meats, cheeses and of course…chocolate!  These little bottles are perfect for tailgating. And so are all of these wonderful recipes below. Enjoy!
